A Royal Chitwan National Park is situated approximately 175 km southwest of Kathmandu in the central Terai region, and covers an area of 932 sq km.
situated in the subtropical Terai region, close to the Indian border, and provides a total contrast to the snow and ice of the Himalaya.
Access to Royal Chitwan National Park is either by air, from Kathmandu to Bharatpur or Meghauli, or by road from Kathmandu or Pokhara. It is also possible to raft down the Narayani River all the way to the Park, a 2 or 3 days trip which usually starts from Mugling at the confluence of Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers.
A visit to Royal Chitwan National Park is a superb excursion, either directly from Kathmandu, or as an extension to a trekking or rafting expedition. There are three main vegetation types – open grasslands, riverine vegetation and hardwood forests - which provide home to 400 different species of birds as well as several rare species of mammals, in particular, the one-horned rhino and the tiger. Its other inhabitants include leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, deer and langur monkeys, whilst the lakes and rivers provide a haven for gharial, marsh mugger crocodiles and freshwater or Gangetic dolphins.
Unlike African animals, those in Chitwan tend to be rather solitary and shy, but the chances of seeing most of the species are very good, owing to the experience of the local guides and the fine vantage point from the back of an elephant. Indeed, these elephant rides are an attraction in themselves and there are also boat trips arranged to see the crocodiles and dolphins . Accommodation in the Park ranges from budget class right through to luxurious, and packages, usually of 2 or 3 days, are available from Kathmandu or can be combined with trekking and/or rafting.
Most places in Royal Chitwan National Park, whether they are deluxe or economy, inside or outside the park, feature similar activities under their regular safari packages. These usually include elephant rides, jungle walks, jeep safaris, canoe rides and bird watching.
When you book a trip to Chitwan National Park, whatever mode of transportation you choose to get there, you have to reach a pickup point, from there you will be picked up by the respective 4WD of the resort you have booked.
