To the north , Sita Chuchura towers above the camp and to the west , the summits of Dhaulagiri II,III, IV and V form a precipitous barrier, and to the east ,Tukuche Peak dominates the skyline.
Day 13: Dhaulagiri Base Camp to French Pass (5,360m), enter Hidden Valley
The way to French Pass from Dhaulagiri Base camp is long and steep, climbing up to the head of the Chhonbardan Glacier before turning north to surmount a spur in the middle of the valley and then continuing up to its exposed crest to eventually emerge onto the col. From the final snow-covered slopes, a breathtaking view of the north face of Dhaulagiri 1 pans out behind , with the icefall of the Chonbardan Glacier and base camp still in deep shadow below. Tukuche Peak and Sita Chuchura tower above, and a new and completely different vista is revealed ahead.

From the wide gently angled snow-fields of the pass, the route stays high for several hours on the crest of an increasingly exposed snowy ridge which juts out east into the Kali Gandaki before plunging away. To the right are the north faces of Tukuche peak and Dhaulagiri 1, straight ahead across the vast chasm of the Kali Gandaki lies Nilgiri, and to our left the brown hills of Mustang recede towards the Tibet.
