Mountaineering in Nepal: Royalty
RULES EFFECTIVE FROM 1996 SPRING

The mountaineering team which has obtained permission to climb the mountain, should pay an amount in convertible foreign currency as per the rate given, as royalty for the Ministry of Tourism.

Every mountaineering team shall pay the amount of royalty specified within 2 months of the receipt of the permit.

In case the mountaineering team does not pay the amount of royalty within 2 months of the date of the receipt of the permit, the permit so received by such mountaineering team shall automatically be cancelled.

 
 
       
 
In case the mountaineering team abandons its plan of expedition after payment of the royalty, the amount so paid shall not be refunded.

His Majesty's government may exempt fully or partially such amount of royalty to any Nepalese mountaineering team or foreign mountaineering team which includes the Nepalese citizen as a member of the mountaineering team.

Nepalese mountaineering team may pay the amount of royalty in Nepali currency.

More than one team may be permitted to climb Sagarmatha [Mt Everest] by each separate route in one season.

A royalty of US$ 50,000.00 has been fixed for Sagarmatha for a team consisting of 7 members. The team may include 5 more members provided it pays extra US$ 10,000.00 for each additional member. The royalty includes trekking fee of the team members. The team members will be granted three months visa. Additional, US$ 20,000.00 will have to be paid by the team willing to scale Sagarmatha by normal South East Ridge route.

In all regions including Khumbu, and expedition team can have up to 7 members for the minimum royalty and 5 more members for the additional royalty.

The team already permitted to scale Sagarmatha will have to pay US$ 10,000.00 if it intends to change the ascent route to normal south east ridge route.

For other peaks than Sagarmatha, the team will have to pay additional 25% of the royalty in US Dollars to change the ascent route.

Expedition team must complete all necessary administrative formalities and procedures in order to send back the garbage of the expedition team to their respective countries, after the completion of the expedition. Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation will take necessary monetary deposit from them, which will be refunded after the dispatch of garbage from Nepal.

The ministry of Tourism has fixed the amount to be deposited for the management of garbage by each mountaineering team who will try to climb any peak in Khumbu region as follows :

Other peaks above 8000m US$ 3,000 or equivalent in convertible foreign currencies
All peaks less than 8000m US$ 2,000 or equivalent in convertible foreign currencies.
