Bisket Jatra celebration in Thimi, Bhaktapur

Bisket Jatra is one of the most colorful and boisterous celebration in Bhaktapur.In Thimi, the local crowd celebrate it by carrying the palanquins of Hindu deities across the town square. People smear and throw vermilion , as they carry the palanquin of the deities. Yomaris (Newari rice cake prepared especially during New Year) are thrown from homes towards the Balkumari temple, while the boisterous crowd tries to catch it.According to a local belief, a son will be born to anyone who catches a yomari!

Greeting Year 2066 with a Bungy Leap - Minister Yami promotes Adventure Tourism

In a bid to promote Nepal Tourism Year 2011, Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Hisila Yami took part in a Bungee jumping programme at The Last Resort , on 14th April.

Minister Yami and six women adventurers took part in the jump. The six sportswomen were: Maya Gurung (Everest Summiteer and Skydiver, Poojan Acharya (Everest Summiteer), Asha Kumari Singh ( Everest Summitteer), Ngawang Bhutik Sherpa (Everest summitteer), Neerjala Tamrakar (Cyclist/ national champion) and Radha Tamang ( kayaker).

Speaking to media persons after the jump, Minister Yami said, “As National Geographic has already declared Nepal as one of the Best Adventure Tourism Destination in the world, I would like to reiterate that Nepal is also one of the safest destination in the world. By taking a bungy jump, I want to send out a message to people wishing to visit Nepal, that our government is ‘pro tourism’ and we are doing our best to promote Nepal in the world tourism arena, especially for the visit Nepal Tourism year 2011.” Taking a jump with six women adventurers, she said, showed her solidarity towards women’s upliftment. She added that she would like to see more female participation in adventure tourism.

Travel : A top pursuit among high income Asia Pacific households

According to a survey carried by Visa, travel is the top pursuit for nearly three-quarters of high income Asia Pacific households . The ‘Spending Patterns and Perspectives of High Income Households’ survey revealed that some 73% of high income Asia Pacific households had travel as their main personal interest over the next two years, a Xinhua report said. Travel was well ahead of food (43%) and music (31%) with 63% of respondents saying that they went away for weekends overseas every six months or so.

The survey was carried out in Singapore, South Korea, Australia, India, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. According to the report, the survey showed that respondents from Hong Kong and India were the region’s most frequent travellers. Over 4,000 people were interviewed during the survey.

K2 Guies Kanchenjunga Expedition 2009

Explore Himalaya organizes Kanchenjunga Expedition
Team members of K2 Guies Kanchenjunga Expedition 2009 left Kathmandu on 8th April. The expedition leader is Oscar Puig Cadiach from Spain. The team members will take the trail to Kanchenjunga Base Camp from Tambawa to Pa khola, and then to Mamankhe, Yamphudin, Chitre and Ramze. Tentatively , 21st April to 21st May has been fixed as the team’s climbing period. Explore Himalaya has organized the logistics for this expedition.

Ram Navami and Chaitra Dashain

On Ram Navami, the nineth (navami) day of the month of Chaitra, the Hindus celebrate the birth of Lord Rama.Lord Rama is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who from time to time appears on this earth in many different forms and restores order whenever evil gains the upper hand. Ram Naumi is celebrated with great pomp and show at Janaki Temple in Janakpur. Hindu pilgrims visit the temples of Ram Mandir, Janaki Mandir and Kanak Mandir on this day.

Chaitra Dashain is also celebrated by the Nepalese Hindus on this day.This day celebrates the victory of the forces of good over evil.Goddess Durga Bhawani, who symbolises powert and truth is worshipped on this day. Devotees throng the shrines dedicated to different goddesses.

Danish Everest Ascent to mark 60 years of UN Declaration of Human Rights

To commemorate the diamond jubilee year of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, a Danish climber Morgen Jensen is all set to conquer the highest peak Mt. Everest without oxygen. Jensen has earlier climbed Cho Oyu and Everest from Tibet side. In 2004-05, he cycled all the way from Denmark to Nepal. In his expedition Jensen will take with him the UN Human rights flag and the Declaration of Human Rights scroll, which he will unfurl and place it at the summit. A support group of 60 trekkers will meet him at the Everest Base Camp to hand over the scroll and the flag. Among the support group are teachers , doctors, CEOs , government officials, businessmen and students and their ages range from 25 to 65 years. The team also wants to link the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with Nepal’s ten-years-long armed conflict, which resulted in serious violation of human rights.

On 2nd April a program was organized by Kipling Travels where national Human Rights Commission , Nepal member, Gauri Pradhan and Human Rights activists, Daman Nath Dhungana and Padma Ratna Tuladhar wished Mr. Jensen success in his mission and lauded him for his efforts. Lars Gundersen, the Director of Kipling Travels, said that since the Danish people do not know much about Nepal and its people, he hopes that this mission shall make them aware of the natural beauty of Nepal and the warm hospitality of the Nepalese. According to him, Nepal is a great destination and worth a visit.

Jensen plans to make it to the summit by 20th to 24th May. During this time the UN general Secretary, Ban Ki-Moon is slated to visit Denmark and Jensen plans to talk to him from the summit. The funds raised from this expedition will be donated to Amnesty International and PA Nepal, an organization that works for orphans.
